Programs and Services

Services at the Epilepsy Foundation of Metropolitan New York include those most requested by persons with epilepsy to participate as fully as possible in their communities.

These include as many or as few as desired from the following: counseling; vocational service & job placement; prevocational and respite services; and information and referral services. The EFMNY also offers community educational/awareness presentations and other events throughout the year (see Epilepsy 101).

All information and training and presentations are free of charge. Other programs are also free of charge or require low cost fees. Fees are based on a sliding scale. Medicaid, Medicare, and some third party insurances are accepted.

The EFMNY also sponsors support groups, community educational presentations and other events throughout the year. We are always seeking persons with a commitment to epilepsy as volunteers.

Whether you or someone you know is living with epilepsy, the EFMNY is available to ease your worries and concerns by offering you customized expert care and attention. Having a seizure condition doesn’t mean that you have to live a less fulfilled life. You don’t have to feel confused, overwhelmed or restricted. Call the EFMNY and allow us to help you sort through the myriad of choices and start building upon new opportunities. School Nurse Program

Managing Students with Seizures: A Training for School Nurses is an accredited continuing education training program designed to provide the school nurse with information, strategies and resources that will enable him/her to better manage the student with seizures by supporting positive treatment outcomes, maximizing educational and developmental opportunities, and ensuring a safe and supportive environment.

This NO COST training program is available online through the National Association of School Nurses’ Online Continuing Education Learning Center. The program is divided into five modules to assist the school nurse in learning to effectively manage seizures in a school environment. At the completion of this training, the participant will be able to:

Recognize seizure activity and its impact on students
Ensure appropriate seizure first aid is given while minimizing stigma
Coordinate ongoing treatment with the student, parents, the school and the health care team
Train teachers and other personnel to recognize and manage seizures
Help to create an environment in which the child continues to achieve educational goals
Upon completion participants will receive 3.2 CNE Contact Hours.

Financial Assistance

It is critical that some people with epilepsy, 70% of whom may be under-employed or unemployed have access to financial resources. The Epilepsy Foundation provides small cash grants, allowing persons to meet emergency needs such as purchasing medications, and assisting persons access government benefits, including The Earned Income Tax Credit and Supplemental Security Income.

At EFMNY, we have been the heart of the NY metro area’s epilepsy community for more than 45 years. As educators, we’ve worked side by side with teachers, corporate leaders, first responders, families and more to raise AWARENESS about seizure disorders. To that end, we provide tailored EDUCATION programs for people in and beyond the epilepsy community. We commit ourselves to these efforts in partnership with leading epilepsy experts because we know that AWARENESS and EDUCATION will lead to EMPOWERMENT, not just for those of us who are directly affected by seizure disorders, but our greater NY metro area communtiy. Together we will go the distance.

We are your local affiliate of the The Epilepsy Foundation of America, the country’s largest and most influential voice for individuals and families affected by epilepsy in the United States. In that capacity, we are privileded to take part in the development and dissemination of educational materials which are carefully designed to reach out to our diverse community.

EpilepsyNYC: Our NEW Educational Blog
We are excited to have recently launched a new epilepsy education blog featuring the areas leading epilepsy experts. The blog features weekly posts on a range of topics from treatment options to living well with epilepsy, Q&As with the experts and Community Spotlights to let you know what’s happening in epilepsy in the NY metro area.

Psychotherapy and Counseling

The Epilepsy Foundation is New York City’s only state certified counseling program specializing serving people with epilepsy. Counseling is available on either a short or long term basis to individuals, families, couples, and groups. Our counselors are caring professionals with experience working with people with epilepsy to resolve concerns and improve their lives. Language need not be a barrier since this service is offered in both English and Spanish.

Some of the goals of counseling are:

Creating a greater understanding of seizures and their impact
Helping families cope with the various aspects of epilepsy
Helping persons overcome obstacles caused by seizures and get more out of life

Employment Services

The Epilepsy Foundation provides New York City’s only specialized job development and vocational services program for people with epilepsy. The Foundation vocational staff has an outstanding record of locating available jobs and helping people with epilepsy enter and remain in the work force. Our individually tailored program admits a wide range of individuals, including persons with varied or even no past work experience.

The Foundation works with people in the following ways:

We help them identify their interests and abilities
We help them develop and improve work related skills
We help them develop their resume and any other necessary documents
We help them search for appropriate opportunities
We help prepare them to present themselves effectively to potential employers
A special state-funded division of the Foundation called Employment Solutions specializes in persons with limited or no work experience. In addition to the assistance already described, Employment Solutions emphasizes job development, and once placed, provides ongoing vocational support, including at the job location where appropriate, to ensure that jobs are kept.

Day Habilitation

Individuals with epilepsy who are not work-ready but wish to become more active and productive members of their community may participate in our Day Habilitation Program. This program includes participation at Community-Based Volunteer Sites and a Community Integration Group.

Community-Based Volunteer Sites
Each Day Habilitation participant volunteers two days per week at a community-based volunteer site selected in accordance with his/her personal and vocational interests. Our program counselors provide initial intensive on-site support and follow up as participants learn the skills necessary to perform job tasks independently and to form meaningful interpersonal relationships with their co-workers.

Community Integration Group
Day Habilitation participants may also elect to participate in our weekly Community Integration Group. Group trips and activities are designed to strengthen participants’ skills in the areas of independent living and travel, accessing community resources, socialization, communication, and problem solving.
